How to calculate your GPA, CGPA and FGPA at the Ghana Institute of Journalism
A lot of students at the Ghana Institute of Journalism still find it difficult to calculate or probably verify their GPAs, CGPAs and FGPAs.
With a Systematic approach crafted below,
NAMBE PATRICK (GIJ-SRC General Secretary Hopeful '19) will show you how to do it.
KEY TERMINOLOGIES
I. CT - Credit Taken/HourThis is the unit of measuring educational credit, usually based on the number of classroom hours per week throughout a semester.
II. CCT- Cumulative Credits Taken
CCT the sum of all credit hours from courses taken in a semester.
III. GP - Grade Point
The Grade Point is the number of (grade) points earned by a student for each course completed in a semester.
IV. GPA - Grade Point Average
GPA is used to find the average result of all grades achieved throughout your course for a semester.
V. CGPA - Cumulative Point Average
CGPA is the average of Grade Points obtained for all courses completed up to a specified or given academic semester.
VI. FGPA - Final Grade Point Average
The FGPA is the CGPA for all courses attained at the end of your academic programme.
GPA CALCULATION
↗ Courses offered at the Diploma level has 2 credit hours and 3 Credit hours for Degree levels.↗ Depending on the number of courses studied for the semester as well as the programme been offered, multiply [(×3) Degree] or [(×2) Diploma] by the corresponding grade point or value in a particular course to get your Grade Points Taken. (GPT)
Note down the Grade Point equivalence
(A = 4.0), (B+ = 3.5)
(B = 3.0), (C+ = 2.5)
(C = 2.0), (D+ = 1.5)
(D = 1.0), (E & X = 0)
↗ Find your cumulative credits by multiplying the required credit hour and the number of courses offered.
Let's say;
[Diploma (2 × 8 = 16 CCT) | (2 × 7 = 14 CCT)]
[(Degree (3 × 6 = 18 CCT) | (3 × 5 = 15 CCT)] etc.
↗ After this, collate all the figures attained from your Grade Points and divide it by the cumulative credits taken.
Let's look at the example below;

CGPA CALCULATION
The CGPA is calculated by dividing the total number of grade points obtained up to any specific time, by the total number of credits of all courses for which you have registered.Let's say; you get you're in Level 100 or Diploma 1, your CGPA calculation starts from your first semester's result together with Second Semester Results.
If you're in Level 200 or Diploma 2, your CGPA calculation starts from Level 100/Diploma 1 first semester's results to the current semester you're pursuing.
Same procedure applies to Level 300s and 400s.
FGPA CALCULATION FOR A DEGREE CERTIFICATE
Here, the CGPAs acquired at various levels are aggregated with a weighting scale of 1:1:2:2Using the degree level as an example with the weighting scale, it'll look like:
Level 100 = 1, Level 200 = 1 , Level 300 = 2 and Level 400 = 2.
Let's say
L100 = CGPA of 3.50
L200 = CGPA of 3.75
L300 = CGPA of 2.75
L400 = CGPA of 3.50
Our FGPA will be:
L100 = 3.50 × 1/6= 0.58
L200 = 3.75 × 1/6= 0.62
L300 = 3.75 × 2/6= 1.24
L400 = 3.50 × 2/6= 1.16
FGPA= 0.58 + 0.62 + 1.24 + 1.16 = 3.60 equivalent to First Class Honours.
However, students at the Diploma levels are awarded certificates based on the CGPA they bag after their programme. The weighting scale of 1:1:2:2 only becomes necessary should they enter the Top-up level.
Also using the Diploma & Top-up levels as an example with the weighting scale, it'll look like:
Diploma 1 = 1, Diploma 2 = 1 , Level 300 Top-Up = 2 and Level 400 Top-up = 2.
Let's say;
Dip1 = CGPA 3.75
Dip2 = CGPA 3.50
L300 Top-up = CGPA 3.75
L400 Top-up= CGPA 3.50
The FGPA will be:
Dip_1 = 3.75 × 1/6= 0.62
Dip_2 = 3.50 × 1/6= 0.58
Level_300 Top-up = 3.75 × 2/6= 1.24
Level_400 Top- up= 3.50 × 2/6= 1.16
FGPA= 0.62 + 0.58 + 1.24 + 1.16 = 3.60 equivalent to First Class Honours.
CLASSIFICATION OF DIPLOMA CERTIFICATES
Distinction | CGPA of 3.5 - 4.0Credit | CGPA of 2.5 - 3.49
Pass | CGPA of 1.0 - 2.49
Fail | CGPA of less than 1.0
CLASSIFICATION OF DEGREE CERTIFICATES
First Class. | CGPA of 3.5 - 4.0Second Class (Upper Division) | CGPA of 3.0 - 3.49
Second Class (Lower Division) | CGPA of 2.5 - 2.99
Third Class | CGPA of 2.0 - 2.49
Pass | CGPA of 1.1 - 1.99
Fail | CGPA of less than 1.0
